Garrett D. Pohlman, MD
Okay so now that you know all about the Prostate Health Podcast, I will share a little about myself.
I grew up on a registered Angus farm in northeast Nebraska. Growing up as a farm kid I quickly learned that patience and hard work was a way of life and these traits remain within me today. My parents modeled this life and also showed me what it is to be genuine and honest with people. I attribute my values and strong work ethics to my parents and would not be where I am today without them.
I was fortunate to have trained at a Urology residency training program, at the University of Colorado Hospital, which offered a comprehensive exposure in managing various prostate conditions. At the University of Colorado Hospital I was able to train with internationally renowned pioneers in prostate cancer including E. David Crawford, MD. I was able to train with these experts on the forefront of prostate cancer treatment including targeted therapy for prostate cancer, which focuses on treating only the areas of cancer in the prostate.
I am a board certified Urologist still actively practicing in a busy private Urology group in the Midwest. Every day I am helping men in diagnosing and managing their prostate issues. Since finishing Urology residency training in 2013, I have already treated over 4,000 men with various prostate conditions.
I decided to start the prostate podcast because going through in my practice, caring for patients, I began realizing that there was never enough time to give patients every bit of information they needed and wanted. I felt like there is so much more in terms of education that I wanted to get into patients hands. I have made handouts, added content to our practice’s website, and social media page. I felt there was still so much more I could do to empower my patients and give them information they can use and apply to their own lives.
Then it also occurred to me, what about all the patients we don’t get to see in our practice. Those that may not routinely even go to a primary care provider or those that minimize their symptoms and neglect to bring it up at their routine health maintenance visits. How can I reach these people? Then it finally hit me – I had to start this Podcast. I’m very excited for you to listen in and begin this journey.
Not only is men’s health an integral part of my profession it is of personal importance to me. I am a husband and a father of two active boys. Not only do I want to stay healthy and present for my family, but hope to ultimately pass along the importance of men’s health to my boys as they get older.
